Lynn area drivers have likely seen more EVs on the road in recent years, and that’s no accident. The United States Government is on a mission to lower carbon emissions, and a huge part of that push is switching America’s vehicles from gas to electric power. This change won’t happen overnight. But the US Department of Transportation is partnering with auto industry pioneer GM and tech company LG as part of its Investing in America Agenda to expedite this much-needed transition. And GM is on a mission of its own to go completely electric by the year 2035.
GM and LG have come together to form a landmark partnership that will significantly increase the availability and affordability of EV batteries through their joint venture, Ultium Batteries. For the government’s part, it has issued a $2.5 billion loan for the building of three electric battery hubs in Tennessee, Michigan, and Ohio. It’s estimated that these battery manufacturing plants will sustain around 11,000 jobs – the number of jobs increases when you consider the labor it will take to build these manufacturing plants.
It’s great that this partnership between GM and LG and their government loan will create jobs and revenue for the states where these plants will operate, but what does it mean for Lynn area drivers? Ultium batteries will provide more power for less buck than electric motor batteries currently on the market, meaning East Boston and Swampscott drivers can expect EVs to become more affordable with time. As part of their commitment to going fully electric, GM has plans to offer EVs for all price points, and they’ll be able to do so because of the lower cost of Ultium batteries, which will be able to get over 300 miles on a single charge.
