What Does the GM & Honda Partnership Mean for Drivers?

Honda aims to reach carbon neutrality by 2050, which is why they’ve partnered with GM. The EVs will be made by combining the new modular platform of GM and their Ultium battery pack and the interior and exterior designs of the Honda brand. While their vision is clear, Honda and GM have yet to announce any specific prices for their future electric vehicles, but they plan to achieve their vision by combining the two companies’ technology, design, and sourcing strategies.

What does this mean for you as a Swampscott-area driver? This means that by 2027, more EVs will be available to buy at a lower price than many current EVs in the market. Not only will there be more EVs available to buy at more affordable prices, but the technology required to charge and maintain them will be more abundant, meaning that it will be more convenient to drive and own an EV than ever before.

Ultium GM & Honda Batteries

One of the major elements that will help Honda and GM achieve their vision of affordable EVs is the Ultium battery technology they plan to utilize. The modularity of Ultium cells allows them to be packaged horizontally or vertically, which allows engineers to design battery packs that can fit in less space in a vehicle.

This lighter and smaller battery pack will have many advantages, including being less expensive to manufacture and being more efficient for EVs. The goal is for the use and implementation of these GM and Honda batteries to spread across the models of both brands, aiding in higher production for EVs in the future.
