The Proper Way to Jump-Start a Car

  1. Park the car with a good battery facing away from your car, and be sure that the vehicle is turned off. 
  2. Pop open the hoods of both cars, and find their batteries. 
  3. Find the positive and negative terminals on the batteries, and make sure that they’re free of any corrosion. 
  4. Put the red clamp of the jumper cable on the positive terminal on the dead battery. 
  5. Put the other red clamp on the positibe terminal of the good battery. 
  6. Put the black clamp on the negative terminal of the good battery. 
  7. Put the final clamp on the negative terminal of the good battery. 
  8. With everything hooked up properly, start up the car with the good battery, wait a few minutes, and then start up the car your car. 
  9. Once the dead battery car has been successfully jump-started, take off the cables in the reverse order they were attached. Shut of the good battery car afterwards. 
  10. Be sure to keep the engine running for at least 10 minutes so that the battery doesn’t die again.
